Description

The Director Competitive Intelligence will lead the building of the Competitive Intelligence function in EMD Serono and is responsible for providing evidence-based, strategic and tactical guidance through actionable intelligence briefings and deliverables.  The position is responsible for designing and implementing a systematic, standardized approach to Competitive Intelligence, to provide clear implications and guidance across varied stakeholder levels with a deep understanding of our markets, competitive landscape and customer segments where we compete in order to capitalize on identified opportunities and minimize risks in pursuit of the organization’s business objectives. 
  • The incumbent will further develop objective insights and recommendations that enable Franchises and Senior Management to make better business decisions regarding commercial and pipeline products, understand current and future competitive landscapes, track market trends and identify opportunities and risks for in-line and late stage brands.
  • Part of the systematic, standardized approach to Competitive Intelligence is the discovery, consolidation and communication of key scientific trends, opportunities, threats and implications related to EMD Serono’s external environment. Functional responsibilities include directing, overseeing, and conducting primary intelligence activities, the analyses of competitor trials, market impact, landscape trends, launch timelines and other external issues across the areas of Multiple Sclerosis, Oncology, Fertility, Endocrinology, General Medicine, Parkinson disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, etc.
  • The Director will define ‘what good looks like’ for Competitive Intelligence capabilities and processes, and will ensure implementation across global franchises, regions and countries. The incumbent will foster knowledge exchange and disseminate best practices within global functional networks.
  • The Director will develop and being accountable for Competitive Intelligence in Multiple Sclerosis, Oncology, Fertility, Endocrinology, General Medicine, Parkinson disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, etc. markets, by using data, information and intelligence from internal and external business partners.
  • The Director will lead the implementation of functional excellence and standards, to ensure effective best practice in Competitive Intelligence, and provide guidance in the interpretation of Competitive Intelligence.
  • The Director will align Competitive Intelligence with top countries and regions to ensure the implementation of franchise strategies.
  • The Director will drive delivery and execution of Competitive Intelligence results to multiple stakeholders.

  • Competitive Intelligence Agencies, Market Research Agencies, Syndicated Competitive and Market Report Agencies, Data vendors, etc.
 
KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide competitive intelligence expertise for the Multiple Sclerosis, Oncology, Fertility, Endocrinology, Parkinson disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, etc. areas including landscaping of current and future competition
  • Responsible for primary intelligence and secondary data collection and ad-hoc investigations
  • Disseminate regular competitive intelligence reports to Franchises, Senior Management and other stakeholders in the company
  • Lead CI efforts at key industry conferences and deliver conference coverage reports on competitor activities
  • Present analytical findings and business implications to Franchises, Senior Management and other stakeholders in the company
  • Collaborate and align with regional and/or country BI to coordinate CI information collection, dissemination, and share best practices
  • Align competitor launch dates and assumptions with forecasting in support of short-, mid-term and long-range planning
  • Utilize secondary data, online resources, primary research, and ad-hoc investigations to support CI function
  • Responsible for maintaining the electronic library of secondary sources and disseminate key industry reports
  • Partner with and manage third party vendors and CI budget
  • May manage contractor, intern and/or direct report
  • Perform all duties in accordance with the company’s Business Principles, corporate directives, government and industry regulations and guidelines

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree is required, preferably in finance, marketing or engineering. An MBA or advanced degree and/or significant industry experience with a BS is required.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of related experience in leadership roles in competitive intelligence, marketing, sales, or business development, with a demonstrated understanding of key competitors in EMD Serono’s markets is required: Multiple Sclerosis, Oncology, Fertility, Endocrinology, General Medicine, Parkinson disease, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Experience within the pharmaceutical industry building Competitive Intelligence departments is required.  An understanding of Primary and Secondary Market Research data is strongly preferred.

  • Ability to influence people and facilitate cooperation of internal and external partners for intelligence, acquisition and recommendation acceptance.
  • Analytical and strategic thinking – able to see the big picture from scattered pieces of information; Ability to collect and synthesize complex information, making it relevant, understandable and actionable for key stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Prior Managerial Experience required.
  • Ability to structure and present qualitative data in a compelling and convincing fashion; strong writing, presentation, and project management skills.
  • Proven track record of success of cross-functional project management, with the ability work collaboratively across all functions with various levels of stakeholder
  • Ability to establish and sustain strong stakeholder relationships and effectively balance stakeholder needs with those of the business
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to balance multiple projects with competing deadlines. Experience with internal product development, licensing and acquisitions and pharmaceutical portfolio reviews is preferred. This position will require 20% travel.
