During the past two years I have participated in a number of different conferences related to Business Intelligence and Competitive Intelligence, the SIIE, the ECIS, SCIP and VSST to take the major ones.

Those who are coming from a technical side have some possibilities when it comes to CI related material in already established/ISI web of knowledge journals. This alternative is less clear for the CI side. There are of course DSS, Data Base for Advances in Information Systems, European Journal of Iformation Systems, Information Systems Journal, Information Systems Research, Journal of Global Information management, Journal of MIS, MIS Quarterly, just to mention the more known and better ranked. But none of them are really advocating CI and BI in particular.

I think there will be a journal of CI and BI during 2010, maybe one that is Open Source based. After ECIS 2009 such an initiative was taken. During SIIE 2010 a similar interest was shown. Similar ideas are up for the VSST 2010 in Toulouse in October. When the proposition does come it is important that it can be accepted by all groups. Running a scientificf journal is not the job of 1 or even 10 academics, but of 50 or 100. It is a large colloborative challenge. In this respect it is also important to know where SCIP stand and what the intereste of F&SI are. This social network on the ning started by Arik Johnson reatches many of these people. I welcome your opinions.

I hope you read the special report on Business Intelligence and the data deluge in the Economist the other week, it shows the importance of the BI/CI field in the years to come.
Who is teaching a CI-related course in the January 2010 semester/term?tag:competitiveintelligence.ning.com,2009-11-17:2036441:Topic:283352009-11-17T03:35:06.885ZSheila Wrighthttp://competitiveintelligence.ning.com/profile/SheilaWright

During the past few years we have seen a strong development of BI, or software for use in private intelligence. Today this has become an area of study for software engineers. On the management side the problem has been studied as part of decision support systems. There has also been much research trying to combine the software side with the management practice side of intelligence, or competitive intelligence. (The distinction of these different academic communities is illustrated in the journals, by decision support systems, journal of global information management, business intelligence journal, journal of knowledge management, expert systems, information resource management journal, information and management, interfaces, cir, decision sciences, information quality management). An important question for us at Blekinge Institute of Technology is exactly this integration. In a larger sense there is also the question about the integration of state/public and private intelligence. How do we set the limits? What works? What does not work? E.g. it is very difficult to get someone with a management or economics degree to make real contributions in software development. And it is difficult to get state and military organizations to open up and see the benefits of private intelligence. At the same time it seems clear that these two levels of integration are often called for.

To recapitulate I see two forms of integrations: 1. between Bi and CI, 2. between Private and Public/State intelligence.

I welcome your ideas on this topic.
That got me thinking about articles published recently that made an impression on my thinking and that might be ones I want to include in the next offering of my Managing Competitive Intelligence course. I thought this might be a good one to send out to our academic NINGas in our group, but don't want to restrict this to them if others outside our sub-group also want to chime in. Which article, academic or otherwise, has made the biggest impression on your thinking about competitive intelligence over the last twelve months or so? Would you please be kind enough to share the publication details (year, author, source, volume, number, pages and/or URL) of the piece so that the rest of us can find it as well. My reason for sending this out via discussion is to ask everyone here what they would recommend, or want, in terms of being kept up-to-date on our field? Does anyone want to keep up-to-date? What ways can we help one another stay current with new articles, dissertations, papers, research, theses? Please feel free to make suggestions since some of the early founders of this site (Arik J and myself primary among these) are determining how to improve its functionality and ability to serve the needs of our growing CI Ning community.

An invitation from Sheila Wright:

Dear CI Ning Colleague:

I am writing to let you know of a unique opportunity for Competitive Intelligence researchers, academics and scholars.

For the first time in the UK certainly, a mainstream academic conference has afforded a dedicated track to Competitive Intelligence, Analysis and Strategy. The Academy of Marketing has accepted CI papers in the past from myself and other colleagues, but we have never had our own Track until now. In discussions with the Conference organisers I was able to convince them that there was a healthy and vibrant community of CI scholars out there, and that we would be able to support a CI Track. I was delighted, subsequently, to accept their invitation to be Track Chair.

The Academy of Marketing Conference in the UK is one of the largest fully referred, double blind reviewed events in the UK. It also provides a full published proceedings for all registrants. The Conference attracts in excess of 600 submissions each year from all continents. Best Paper Awards are given for each Track and the overall Best Paper Award is a highly prized achievement.

Recognising that refereed Conference papers are typically a development vehicle towards a refereed Journal article, the Academy of Marketing has adopted what is becoming common practice for a number of academic conferences in that they ask for a 5 page maximum submission for a full paper with a correspondingly lower page limit for working papers, posters and doctoral colloquium submissions.

Full details can be found at: http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/conferences/am2009/conference.html. You should bookmark this page and consult it regularly as updates are loaded frequently. You will find a list of the Tracks at: http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/conferences/am2009/tracks.html and the description for our Track at: http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/conferences/am2009/pdfs/ci.pdf

I was restricted to a word limit in the Track title and also in setting out the description so let me try to expand. The Track title is deliberately written and you should read it as embracing all aspects of competitive intelligence, competitive analysis and competitive strategy. In fact there is no real requirement for submissions to be especially marketing related, as we all know that CI stretches across all business functions. So, please feel free to take the three areas mentioned in the Track title as isolated topics should you wish to.

I would also like to invite you to encourage any PhD students who are working in this area to submit a paper to the Doctoral Colloquium. I am expecting my PhD students to take part and I know from talking with the organisers that they are excited at what is planned for this part of the Conference. It is quite likely to be very interactive and as such, highly beneficial to PhD students whatever stage they are at in their studies. Some very impressive names will also be supporting the Doctoral Colloquium as facilitators and instructors. If your students are sufficiently advanced in their work, then there is of course the potential for joint authored pieces with their supervisors. It would seem sensible to take full advantage of the trip.

One of my tasks as Track Chair of course is to identify potential paper reviewers. Regardless of whether you wish to make a submission or not, if you would like to be included on the list of reviewers then please e-mail me separately with a note of your special interest areas and I will add you to my list. My address is sheila.wright@dmu.ac.uk

You should be aware that volunteering to act as a reviewer does not bring any special benefits either financial or otherwise, other than the honour of having acted as such for a large and prestigious Conference which in itself is a sought after role, and worthy of inclusion on your CV under the "Scientific Committee/Reviewing Roles" section. Everybody, and I mean everybody, has to pay their registration fee in full at this one. There are no exceptions. Acting as a reviewer does not prevent you from making a submission. The estimate is that you would be highly unlikely to receive more than 3 submissions to review and clear guidance will be given regarding the process.

Final piece of information: Submission deadline is 31st January 2009

This mailing list has been compiled from previous contacts but please feel free to share this information with anybody else you think would appreciate knowing. If they did not receive a note from me direct then please ask them to send me their name and e-mail address so that I can add them to the list for future announcements for this and similar academic conferences where competitive intelligence features.

In closing, may I wish you all a prosperous, safe and peaceful New Year. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the 2009 Academy of Marketing Conference in Leeds.

Kind regards, Sheila
