Dear Group members,

I recently read some interesting insights on Crowdsourcing, a practice that Wikipedia defines as "the act of outsourcing tasks, traditionally performed by an employee or contractor to a large group of people or community (a crowd) through an open call".
Dear Group members,

I recently read some interesting insights on Crowdsourcing, a practice that Wikipedia defines as "the act of outsourcing tasks, traditionally performed by an employee or contractor to a large group of people or community (a crowd) through an open call". The key in crowdsourcing is to break down a specific task into small chunks of work that can be performed by a relevant established professional (or knowledgeable amateur) in his spare time for the benefit or a larger organization.

This type of practice has already been used in Marketing activities such as when a company wants to design a new t-shirt it makes an open call for submissions from web users. Crowdsourcing has also been used in writing code in software production. A more hypothetical example would be that a CI - professional would crowdsource parts of a background investigation into a competitor so that someone would do financial due diligence. another value chain analysis, another competitive positioning analysis etc... There are no immediate arguments that come to my mind why this sort of practice could not be used in industrial manufacturing, too, at some point in the process.

Crowdsourcing is not a subject without controversy, not least because of the implications it has for the world of work. But I started to think more deeply about the fact that the crowdsourcing assignments are sought through an "open call". More specific questions that came to my mind are: How open is the call for submissions? How much signals about its intentions does the company give away by submitting the open call, although the assignment is broken down into smaller tasks that do not necessarily give away the whole plan? How can companies utilize crowdsourcing without giving away too much information about its intentions? How can competitive intelligence professionals get intel on the intentions of competitors by mining open calls for crowdsourcing assignments? How can that be done ethically?

Maybe some of you have already come across crowdsourcing as a phenomenon, and maybe also the CI-implications of crowdsourcing. It would be interesting to discuss this topic here on the IntelCollab.

Best regards,

Ari

Our topic on today's call was... well, brainstorming topics for future calls - with at least a couple coming out for next time that met with broad approval - since SCIP 2010 is the week after next perhaps August would agree to chat about the program a little (being chairman of the program committee and all).

Our topic on today's call was... well, brainstorming topics for future calls - with at least a couple coming out for next time that met with broad approval - since SCIP 2010 is the week after next perhaps August would agree to chat about the program a little (being chairman of the program committee and all).

I'd earlier nominated August to lead a Google Wave tutorial, which is also still highly anticipated, but he's traveling today unfortunately - so maybe there's room for two 30-minute topics before SCIP hits the following week? What say you 8of12? Double-header, prefer to do these separately, suggest something else? (Sorry to put you on the spot August ;-) and happy birthday on Saturday by the way.)

In other news, we had some very good suggestions that came out, one highlight included running a separate Google Wave for each teleconference, which should clean up the wave environment considerably (I'm still struggling with how to delete things). Likewise, general consensus that the 9:00 AM Eastern time slot, while better for those outside North America than 1:00 PM EST, could still be improved upon by splitting the difference at 10:30 Eastern for 60 minutes. We'll test this out next week with apologies to our friends in the PacRim; incidentally, I did hear from many who said the earlier time is a deal-breaker, so maybe this is something of a compromise we can settle on for the time being? Let's hope so.

With that, please share any and all topics you would like to offer up for future Friday teleconferences and if you have a suggested guest speaker that's even better. I'll share a couple ideas in comments to this post which were telegraphed to me privately and if the originator wants to claim and clarify please go ahead.

Happy weekend all,

As outlined in Valerie Shuman's vision a few weeks ago, the Intelligence Collaborative will really revolve around initiatives that come under the "umbrella" of the group. Instead of being "in charge" of such initiatives, or providing capital for such activities, the Collaborative becomes a place where you can register your intentions with your fellow colleagues, gain momentum, support, advice, and volunteers, and move forward into the future.

Based on our conversations last Friday, it seems that already two initiatives are forming up.

1. Intelligence Mentoring

Discussions with Martha Matteo led to us define the need for mentoring for students and young professionals looking to continue cultivate a lifelong career in intelligence. This initiative could unite younger professionals with highly experienced thoughtleaders for mentoring and coaching opportunities, as well as bringing educators together with potential speakers for their programs.

2. Portuguese language intelligence community

As suggested by Lisbon-based professor and strategy consultant Miguel Duarte Ferreira, the Intelligence Collaborative can be a place where intelligence professionals who speak Portuguese can come together to share articles, opportunities for online training, and potential speakers.

To me, both of these sound VERY cool, and I look forward to participating in both of these initiatives. The question is, what platform might we use to coordinate these activities? This Ning site? Google Wave? Other?

Also - what other initiatives are you interested in proposing? Our Friday morning conference calls might be good place to get discussions going.

That's all for now. For those of you who were on the conference call yesterday, I would like to thank you and say how enjoyable it was to take a moment during the week to catch up with my intelligence colleagues from around the globe. Speaking on behalf of some of the instigators of the Intel Collab, we are very excited given recent developments.

First, there were some great presentations from my colleagues Messieurs Johnson and Jackson on the shape of professional organizations in the future. It really felt like our key messages for the Intel Collab are coming together and are being communicated. To recap, our fundamental tenets are:

1. No hierarchy
2. We're not handling money
3. If you want to make something happen, by all means, do it!
4. Global!
5. Work together, have fun, share, collaborate
6. Use the Internet a lot - it's cheap, if not free

On yesterday's call, we felt that really coalescing. Imagine how cool it was to see - spontaneously - Portuguese speaking colleagues connect in real time on Google Wave based on a common language and a shared passion for intelligence. And how about the revelation that there's a huge desire among young people to learn about what we do - and to see mentoring initiatives begin to form around it.

That's the spirit here, and it's great to see it come together. In the coming weeks and months, I'll bet you'll see even more conversations, initiatives, and events come together.

We hope that you'll take part, attend a conference call, start collaborating!
Summary Corner Updatetag:competitiveintelligence.ning.com,2010-02-11:2036441:Topic:296862010-02-11T19:16:12.853ZAugust Jacksonhttp://competitiveintelligence.ning.com/profile/AugustJackson
