Colin,
I recommend acquiring three books immediately:
“Business and Competitive Analysis: Effective Application of New and Classic Method” by Craig Fleisher and Babette Bensoussan
“Competitive Intelligence Advantage: How to Minimize Risk, Avoid Surprises, and Grow Your Business in a Changing World” by Seena Sharp
“Intelligence Analysis: A Target-Centric Approach” by Robert M Clark
CI education is available through the Fuld-Gilad-Herring Academy of Competitive Intelligence (www.academyci.com/) or the Institute for Competitive Intelligence (www.institute-for-competitive-intelligence.com).
Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals (scip.org) is the current professional association for CI - I think its value is marginal, but it may be worth joining for a year or so.
There are two consultancies that consistently produce worthwhile CI content:
- IntelCollab webinars from Aurora WDC
- Presentations and podcasts from Sean & Scott at Cascade Insights
With regard to sales intelligence consult Ellen Naylor's invaluable articles and blog.
