Competitive Intelligence

Tactical, Operational & Strategic Analysis of Markets, Competitors & Industries

I have been tasked with creating a CI program for my company, NanoLumens, but I do not have a clue where or how to start. Any advice?

There is no better way than learning what works and what does not work than from others that have been through the process. Of course you have you own needs, challenges, etc. I would suggest:

Colin,

I recommend acquiring three books immediately:

  • Business and Competitive Analysis: Effective Application of New and Classic Method” by Craig Fleisher and Babette Bensoussan

  • “Competitive Intelligence Advantage: How to Minimize Risk, Avoid Surprises, and Grow Your Business in a Changing World” by Seena Sharp

  • Intelligence Analysis: A Target-Centric Approach” by Robert M Clark

CI education is available through the Fuld-Gilad-Herring Academy of Competitive Intelligence (www.academyci.com/) or the Institute for Competitive Intelligence (www.institute-for-competitive-intelligence.com).

Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals (scip.org) is the current professional association for CI - I think its value is marginal, but it may be worth joining for a year or so.

There are two consultancies that consistently produce worthwhile CI content:

- IntelCollab webinars from Aurora WDC

- Presentations and podcasts from Sean & Scott at Cascade Insights

With regard to sales intelligence consult Ellen Naylor's invaluable articles and blog.

My end users will be the leadership of the company, as well as our outside sales force. Leadership is seeking competitive information as well as regular market and industry research & analysis. Sales force is looking for sales support and intel on current and future opportunities. Do you know of any websites or other organizations I can join to learn more about CI? and or any place or books to acquire education?

Chances are it is probably tough to even answer that right now.

Determine the initial scope and intent of the program. Who are the end users of the CI 'product' and what are they going to do with it?
