Thierry Spanjaard has a dual educational background having studied computer science as well as business management. He graduated in an International MBA from ISG, Paris, MIM, New York and IMUA Tokyo. His first positions were as a analyst programmer in software houses.
Then he joined Gemplus (www.gemplus.com ), the world leader in smart cards and their application in 1990. At that time, Gemplus was a 150 employee company. At first, Thierry Spanjaard was in charge of marketing and communication for smart card readers and personalization tools. In this environment, Thierry performed all aspects of marketing and communication including: market studies, brochure copywriting and diffusion, press releases, exhibition organization, etc…. Then, Thierry headed the training department at Gemplus. He covered both customer education on technical subjects and internal training on business and market subjects. In this position, Thierry was involved on a daily basis with oral and written communication in English. Then Thierry, created the Competitive Intelligence activity, and then managed the Market Intelligence organization. In this context, Thierry gained an extensive knowledge of the rf-id, smart card, telecom and electronic transaction industries, as well as an extensive network of contacts among the press and analysts. Thierry left Gemplus in 2001.
Since 2001, Thierry Spanjaard had been acting as an independent consultant. He was, at first responsible for EMEA area development for Way Systems an American startup in the field of mobile payment.
Then, he developed his activity at the crossroads of Market Intelligence and the Smart Card Industry. He started "Intelling" as a consultancy, and he is now publishing a weekly newsletter about the smart card industry: "Smart Insights".
