Upcoming calls for papers and meetings of interest to CI academics

Here are two very exciting meetings that should be of interest to our entire community of academic researchers. I will try to keep us updated on these over time and would appreciate hearing from others whether this is helpful to them. Craig

An invitation from Sheila Wright:

Dear CI Ning Colleague:

I am writing to let you know of a unique opportunity for Competitive Intelligence researchers, academics and scholars.

For the first time in the UK certainly, a mainstream academic conference has afforded a dedicated track to Competitive Intelligence, Analysis and Strategy. The Academy of Marketing has accepted CI papers in the past from myself and other colleagues, but we have never had our own Track until now. In discussions with the Conference organisers I was able to convince them that there was a healthy and vibrant community of CI scholars out there, and that we would be able to support a CI Track. I was delighted, subsequently, to accept their invitation to be Track Chair.

The Academy of Marketing Conference in the UK is one of the largest fully referred, double blind reviewed events in the UK. It also provides a full published proceedings for all registrants. The Conference attracts in excess of 600 submissions each year from all continents. Best Paper Awards are given for each Track and the overall Best Paper Award is a highly prized achievement.

Recognising that refereed Conference papers are typically a development vehicle towards a refereed Journal article, the Academy of Marketing has adopted what is becoming common practice for a number of academic conferences in that they ask for a 5 page maximum submission for a full paper with a correspondingly lower page limit for working papers, posters and doctoral colloquium submissions.

Full details can be found at: http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/conferences/am2009/conference.html. You should bookmark this page and consult it regularly as updates are loaded frequently. You will find a list of the Tracks at: http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/conferences/am2009/tracks.html and the description for our Track at: http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/conferences/am2009/pdfs/ci.pdf

I was restricted to a word limit in the Track title and also in setting out the description so let me try to expand. The Track title is deliberately written and you should read it as embracing all aspects of competitive intelligence, competitive analysis and competitive strategy. In fact there is no real requirement for submissions to be especially marketing related, as we all know that CI stretches across all business functions. So, please feel free to take the three areas mentioned in the Track title as isolated topics should you wish to.

I would also like to invite you to encourage any PhD students who are working in this area to submit a paper to the Doctoral Colloquium. I am expecting my PhD students to take part and I know from talking with the organisers that they are excited at what is planned for this part of the Conference. It is quite likely to be very interactive and as such, highly beneficial to PhD students whatever stage they are at in their studies. Some very impressive names will also be supporting the Doctoral Colloquium as facilitators and instructors. If your students are sufficiently advanced in their work, then there is of course the potential for joint authored pieces with their supervisors. It would seem sensible to take full advantage of the trip.

One of my tasks as Track Chair of course is to identify potential paper reviewers. Regardless of whether you wish to make a submission or not, if you would like to be included on the list of reviewers then please e-mail me separately with a note of your special interest areas and I will add you to my list. My address is sheila.wright@dmu.ac.uk

You should be aware that volunteering to act as a reviewer does not bring any special benefits either financial or otherwise, other than the honour of having acted as such for a large and prestigious Conference which in itself is a sought after role, and worthy of inclusion on your CV under the "Scientific Committee/Reviewing Roles" section. Everybody, and I mean everybody, has to pay their registration fee in full at this one. There are no exceptions. Acting as a reviewer does not prevent you from making a submission. The estimate is that you would be highly unlikely to receive more than 3 submissions to review and clear guidance will be given regarding the process.

Final piece of information: Submission deadline is 31st January 2009

This mailing list has been compiled from previous contacts but please feel free to share this information with anybody else you think would appreciate knowing. If they did not receive a note from me direct then please ask them to send me their name and e-mail address so that I can add them to the list for future announcements for this and similar academic conferences where competitive intelligence features.

In closing, may I wish you all a prosperous, safe and peaceful New Year. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the 2009 Academy of Marketing Conference in Leeds.

Kind regards, Sheila
