Social networking tools like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn are fabulous! However, what doors did you leave open? In this session, which takes place in Second Life, you'll see real examples, and we'll discuss issues and best practices around security and privacy when using these tools and also how to find information using these tools.

Marcia Rodney has been with Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. for more than six years, initially as senior analyst in library services reporting to strategic intelligence, and also supporting the scientific and engineering staff. She now works as an operations analyst, reporting to the Albuquerque office of Ball's Systems Engineering Solutions business unit. Marcia both tracks and teaches social networking for her team. Prior to her work with Ball, Marcia was part of the competitive intelligence team at Qwest, supported technical research at Maxtor (now Seagate), worked at the Earth Sciences and Maps Libraries at CU-Boulder, and in long ago chapters was librarian for Communication Arts and a researcher at CBS News. As principal analyst for her own firm, RSL Research Group, she works on survey design and analysis, primarily in the library field, as well as supporting small business clients. Marcia is looking forward to more time on her bike and a different kind of searching.

Thanks Scott...I'll be sure to join Second Life before the session. Looks straightforward enough! Cheers, Ellen

Thanks Scott - I'd appreciate that - I'll get back to you on time/day, also I think a simple tutorial here for people might be a good intro. I've never been in Second Life (yet) so meanwhile I'll look forward to getting an avatar and trying it out.

Hi Ellen - to clarify: No, you do NOT need to be an SLA member to attend this event. However, it is being held in Second Life, so you do need to get an avatar and be in-world to attend (Second Life is free to join and download). See http://join.secondlife.com

Do you have to be an SLA member to attend this talk? That would be useful to know. I'm guessing not, since I went to the link and looks like you just join Second Life? Thanks! Ellen

Thanks, Ellen and Arik! Arik, I'd be happy to set up a time with you to help get you into Second Life. Will also (continue to) look at offering a session for this community to help folks get into Second Life. If you are an SLA member, you can register for a free webinar on this topic in October, November or December; see http://www.sla.org/content/learn/members/webinars/secondlife.cfm (unfortunately not possible currently for non-SLA members to register)

Scott:

This looks great! And for anyone who doesn't know Marcy...she's brilliant been at CI, information collection for a long time and she is sharp. I've been wondering about security and web 2.0, which is not addressed enough. It's kind of like how companies dodge counterintelligence in favor of focusing on CI collection. You gotta think about them both!

Looking forward to your words of wisdom, Marcia!
