Whether you do competitive intelligence inside a company or you provide CI as a consultant, there seems to be a division between commissioned projects (i.e., "what are our competitors doing during the Christmas season?") and broader monitoring of the competitive environment. Admittedly, this might be a simplistic way of thinking because a project might be to characterize the environment.
If you aren't working on a specific project with near term deliverables, how do you go about keeping track of the competitive environment? Do your internal customers or clients care that you do this? What approaches do you use and what is difficult about such monitoring?
