Thanks for your comment Deepak.

I agree that most companies focus on the immediate and fail to think ahead - not necessarily the individual decision makers, but the organizations themselves. In order to make an organization forward looking, systems to scan the horizon (early warning systems) need to be institutionalized.

I think if the approach to CI is not holistic, then stress would merely be on detecting and countering fresh threats or as in the example you cite, a pre entry confirmation. To be successfully ahead in the competition, continuous Horizon scanning with a view to avoid surprises, and retain the edge after having achieved it is important.

The reason for the short sighted view may be that short term business goals assume greater importance in the environment today.
