Competitive intelligence is critical for achieving this objective! Several successful economies such as South Korea, China, Taiwan and Brazil have used competitive intelligence for achieving their economic objectives. Hopefully the Indian implementers who will deal with the “how…

Global uncertainty and competitive intelligence

Competitive intelligence can be likened to an insurance policy for a company – it helps mitigate risks arising from developments in the external environment by providing timely warnings.

Thanks to heightened global economic uncertainties, the CI  insurance premiums have been rising sharply. Increased risks have also changed the way companies strategise.

What this means for competitive intelligence is that companies will now need to......…

The perfect gift

All of us have received gifts at some time or the other – on birthdays perhaps? All gifts are fun to open, but once in a while we have received something that was exactly what we wanted – the perfect gift. Competitive intelligence in India on a shoestring

How can small businesses in India do competitive intelligence (CI)? I had the opportunity to discuss this with a group of small businesses at the TiE breakfast event in Pune last month.

Small businesses have limited resources at their disposal and need to figure out ways to do CI on small budgets. In…

Flexible ethics

Most companies want to be and claim to be on the right side of the fine line that demarcates ethical CI from low life espionage. Only, different people and companies draw lines at different places.

Let’s first distinguish between personal and corporate ethical lines. My friend works with the competition. Is it OK if he talks to me about his company when he has had a beer too many, and I share that information internally in my organisation? This lies in the personal space – am I…

Social media for CI?

The social media revolution has changed the way we interact with each other. Platforms such as Facebook, Orkut, Linkedin, blogs, forums, online communities, message boards, etc. have become mediums for everyone across the globe to exchange thoughts, ideas and opinions. The power of such a large number of people communicating and collaborating with virtually no barriers is unimaginable.

Among other things, customers are extremely vocal about their likes, dislikes, needs, wants and… Continue

Competitive Intelligence, Government Acquisitions, and a Hallucinogenic Future

With the bankruptcy of General Motors, our economy has finally hopped over the plane’s wing into the Twilight Zone. Not that this event was surprising to anybody with a cursory interest in money or cars - GM bet its future on the world’s endless thirst for bloated Hummers and Yukons and left quality and disruptive innovation to Asian rivals, all while locked into being America’s largest private provider of healthcare and pensions. You can get six Jack Welches, ten Peter Druckers and those guys… Continue

Mobile Oil Change Business Competitive Intelligence Gathering in Business Planning Phase; Case Study - By Lance Winslow

By Lance Winslow

Whenever you start any type of business, it is a pretty good idea to see what competition you might have out there. Find out what they are charging, who they are and what type of volume they have. If you are planning on starting a Mobile Oil Change business, these rules also apply. Typically, mobile oil change operators do not realize that their biggest competition is really the low-cost discounters that are at fixed… Continue

Win Loss Analysis is more than Competitive Intelligence

Win loss analysis is my favorite tactical cooperative intelligence practice as it offers the best ROI of any sales intelligence tool. You gain intelligence by interviewing your customers shortly after the sales event to find out why they chose to do business with you or decided on a competitor. The data gathered combines knowledge from sales, customers, competitors, and your marketplace.

Consider these points to develop a cooperative B to B win loss process:

- Clearly… Continue

What is competitive intelligence?

"There are no secrets, only information you don't yet have."

Source: from the Drop.io Blog

I thought that was a very pithy, if apt, description of CI.

Benchmarking with the World-Class Competitive Intelligence Model!

Do the managers that fund your competitive intelligence (CI) function ask how your company’s CI function stacks up against world class standards? Providing fact-based evidence of how your CI function compares to world-class standards has several benefits. First, you can evaluate your CI function across nine (9) dimensions that define world class standards. Second, you can isolate aspects within each dimension that can be targeted for improvement. Finally, you can develop an action plan to… Continue

Sad News

I just received an email this morning informing me that Cormac Ryan passed away last Friday after a battle with cancer. Cormac was a long time, active member of SCIP and I had the opportunity to speak with him several times during various events at SCIP, including SCIP08 and the 2007 European Summit in Bad Nauheim. I always enjoyed speaking with him.

A memorial service will be held this Saturday, May 17, 2008 at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas.
