Thanks Ellen- I was using the Advanced Search on LinkedIn (which is really quite good) but certainly AIIP's member directory is the more the direct route.
Ellen Naylor Comment by Ellen Naylor on September 10, 2009 at 9:16am
I'm coming in very late on this, but would add AIIP (Association of Independent Information Professionals) as a great resource. Anyone can search the member directory by keyword (primary research, industry, etc) and find resources. I belong to this organization, and like any resource you need to check up on the person by asking around, which isn't too tough with social networks to add as a resource, these days! I have referred fellow IPs business by finding them on this database. As a member I belong to AIIP's listserv so I have an idea of the knowledge of various members who participate.

I have been in the same boat as Eric - the tyranny of the urgent sounds very familiar - but am glad to have found this group.
Eric Badertscher Comment by Eric Badertscher on February 23, 2009 at 3:32pm
I just realized the the "tyranny of the urgent" has kept me from checking on this Group in far too long. Thanks to all the people who responded to my initial question - and my apologies for not acknowledging sooner. My question has been answered, and then some.

Best regards,

Eric Badertscher

Mark Johnson, Alan Kelsky,et al:
Probably one of the better ways to find the companies in desperate need for your expertise and services is to subscribe to the Commerce Business Daily (CBD). In that publication (published by the Government every business day of the year) you will find RFP's (Request For Proposal) for goods and services wanted/needed by every Agency of the Government. Full direction and disclosure for obtaining a Bid Package and the Purchaser/Contract Manager contact method is in the description.

Another section of the publication will tell you who has won the bid. There are a lot of opportunities for sub-contacting in that section. If you don't want to subscribe to the CBD, go to the Public Library and if they subscribe to the CBD. If you are near a military post, drive over and arrange to visit that post's contracting division. They may have copies, but they are usually three days behind the publication date.

Any questions or comments, give me a call or comment on this site. I'll probably find out you know more about this than I do.

There are circumstances in the market today that threaten to capsize almost any enterprise you can imagine. Some of these factors are under business control and some are seemingly under nobody's control. While this is dangerous, I believe the key is keeping our minds alert to the factors which are at play.

The nature of early warning in CI is in visualizing our fears, giving form to them, and setting up tests to make sure that the feared circumstances do not materialize without warning. We also help strategists develop contingency plans to cope so they are not in reactive mode when adverse circumstances arrive.

It seems to me that companies would be in desperate need for such services. The key is in identifying the opportunities and pitfalls, then working with the companies most likely to benefit or suffer from these circumstances.

The stimulus bill itself is a thornier problem. Government interventionist policies have a clumsy way of picking winners and losers that has little to do with market forces. But it sometimes takes a very close reading of law and policy to understand how that mechanical process unfolds.

There is CERTAINLY opportunity in all this. Ya fling a billion bucks here and a billion bucks there...pretty soon it's real money. Catching hold of some of this cash is the fun job of the century!
Alan Kelsky Comment by Alan Kelsky on February 17, 2009 at 3:16pm
Do you think the economic stimulus bill will present opportunities for freelancers?

How can we leverage the current economic environment to our advantage?
