Hello John,

It is a pleasure to see you at this website. I just returned from an assignment in China, where I had the opportunity to stay in Beijing and soak in the Olympic atmosphere. See you in SCIP09 in Chicago.

Well - I like the AIIP model, where the board's role is to coordinate multiple committees that are responsible for the different aspects of AIIP. AIIP is much smaller. I suspect that they have more members involved - as volunteering is part of the ethos.

It's also highly democratic. Each annual conference includes an AGM where members have the chance to vote on the budget, and approve / reject board member submissions on the prior year plus plans for future years.

Volunteers are also not quite press-ganged into joining up but if you have a skill or express an interest, you are "invited" to join- and as it's shared by many, the actual workload for most people is low.

Well maybe I've been too vociferous. I've had one private email saying to put up or shut up, and suggesting I stand for the board. Trouble is I'm not sure that I want that. Sometimes it's good to be on the inside but in this case, I'm not convinced. I think that there are a lot of people who are happy with the way things are going, or can't be bothered either way. I suspect that on the board I'd feel emasculated - as I'd be a lone voice of criticism. Not totally sure though. (I know what Sheila Wright thinks, but I'm not Sheila).
