Profile Information

About Me:
Dr. John E. Prescott is The Thomas O’Brien Chair of Strategy at the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also Director of the Ph.D. program. Dr. Prescott earned his Ph.D. in Business Administration at the Pennsylvania State University. His undergraduate and masters degrees were earned at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Stevens Institute of Technology.

Dr. Prescott's research interests focus on dynamic competitive rivalry, alliance networks, technology strategy and corporate governance. A specific focus is the design and implementation of competitive intelligence systems. He has published numerous articles in journals such as Management Science, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Review and Planning Review. John is the author and/or editor of five books, Establishing a World-Class Competitive Intelligence Function - Workbook, Competitive Intelligence: A Guide to Your Journey to Best-Practice Processes, Advances in Competitive Intelligence, Global Perspectives on Competitive Intelligence, and Proven Strategies in Competitive Intelligence. He was the executive editor for The Competitive Intelligence Review for 8 years and was the co-editor of the Journal of Competitive Intelligence and Management. His teaching responsibilities include MBA, Ph.D. and executive courses in strategic management, competitive intelligence, and international management. In 2000, he was selected as a finalist for the Fay Brill Service award from the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP). In 1994 he was selected for the meritorious award from SCIP for outstanding contributions to the field of competitive intelligence. In 1986 Dr. Prescott was awarded the Valley Forge Honor Certificate for Excellence in the category of Economic Education for designing and implementing an MBA elective in competitive intelligence. In 1996 he designed and implemented the first web-based course in competitive intelligence. He is the content expert for competitive intelligence benchmarking studies conducted by the American Productivity and Quality Center (APQC.org). He was also the Dean of the Business Analyst Program at Texas Instruments. Dr. Prescott consults internationally.

Dr. Prescott was a founder and the 1991-1992 President of the Board of Directors of the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP.org). John has served multiple terms on SCIP’s board of directors and recently was a trustee of the Competitive Intelligence Foundation. He is a member of the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society, a past member of the editorial board of the Academy of Management Journal, and an International Advisor of the Society of Competitive Intelligence, China.
